The highest-scoring New York offense on the first Sunday of the NFL season belonged to the Bronx Bombers.
By matching their season high with 16 runs, the Yankees had more scoring than the New York football Giants and New York Jets combined in their openers. The two NFL teams managed only 15 points between them.
Just a couple of hours before the Giants lost 19-3 against the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas, the AL wild card-leading Yankees won 16-7 in their series finale across the street against the Texas Rangers.
The Jets lost their opener 20-12 at Buffalo.
Even the NL's New York Mets, in a 10-5 home loss to the Cincinnati Reds, outscored the Giants.
